How the calculator works out the numbers

MPF contributions

Employer and employee each contribute 5% of the employee’s monthly relevant income to the Mandatory Provident Fund. Below HK$7,100 a month the employee pays nothing, but the employer still pays 5%. Above HK$30,000 both contributions stop at HK$1,500.

Other items

  • Employees’ compensation insurance: every employer must insure every employee against work injury. The calculator adds 1.5% of salary as a planning figure. The insurer sets the actual premium according to the job. Labour Department
  • Salaries tax: not deducted from monthly pay. Employees file a return and pay progressive rates of 2% to 17%, or the standard rate if that is lower. See our salaries tax guide.
  • The first month: the calculator shows a normal month. In the first 30 days of a new job the employee’s own MPF contribution is not due, so take-home pay is slightly higher.
  • 13th month and bonuses: not included. Add them to the salary for the month in which they are paid.
  • Candidates who need a visa: see Hire Foreigner in Hong Kong.
  • Exchange rate: USD figures use the rate shown with the results.
